3.5 kilometre of dual carriageway provided to create the A6 Toome Bypass.

    Status:

    • constructed

    Cost:

    • £20.6m

    Overview:

Toome Bypass diverts traffic onto a 3.5 kilometre dual carriageway. A 98metre long single span 'Bowstring Girder' bridge carries the bypass over the Lower River Bann, allowing the bypass approach embankments to be kept low in the environmentally sensitive area north of the village.

Up to 22,000 vehicles previously passed through Toome every day and the new bypass has removed a significant amount of the traffic from the town. The general quality of life in the village has greatly improved as has access to the local community facilities. Traffic levels on local roads have also been reduced with consequent environmental, community and safety benefits.

    Key dates:

    • opened to traffic on 15 March 2004
