The Bicycle Strategy for Northern Ireland

The Department for Infrastructure has outlined the kind of cycling community we would like Northern Ireland to be in 25 years. The vision is “a community where people have the freedom and confidence to travel by bicycle for every day journeys”.

Northern Ireland changing gear

Northern Ireland Changing Gear – A Bicycle Strategy for Northern Ireland’ was published in August 2015.

This final Strategy follows on from the Draft Bicycle Strategy for Northern Ireland which published in August 2014 and went out for a 12 week public consultation between August and November 2014.  Nine public consultation events were held across Northern Ireland and over 100 written responses were received in response to the public consultation.  You can view or download a copy of the Consultation report on the draft Bicycle Strategy.  Consideration was given to all feedback received which was important in drawing up this final strategy.

NI changing gear seminar

As part of the draft bicycle strategy consultation process a one day ‘Northern Ireland Changing Gear’ seminar took place on the 16 October 2014 in Belfast.

The seminar targeted decision makers who have an interest in promoting health and wellbeing, better cities and towns and sustainable transport in Northern Ireland.  Around 180 delegates heard international and local speakers share their knowledge and enthusiasm on how using the bicycle for every day journeys can benefit communities.  Presentations given on the day are available on the Presentations from the NI Changing Gear Seminar - October 2014 page.
