Sustainable Drainage

Sustainable drainage (SuDS) is an approach to managing surface water that mimics natural drainage processes by slowing, storing and treating rainwater close to where it falls. This helps manage flood risk, improves the local environment and supports long term climate resilience.

Sustainable Drainage Directorate

The Sustainable Drainage Directorate is responsible for the development and progression of policy and regulatory frameworks for sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and natural flood management (NFM) in Northern Ireland. It provides strategic oversight and works with partner organisations to support their implementation through new development and wider flood risk management activity.

While we cannot prevent all flooding from happening, we can reduce the impacts with appropriate infrastructure improvements and development.

We will work with nature to better manage water and wastewater.
