    Date published: 18 November 2025

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £650,000 pedestrian and cycling improvement scheme on Island Street, Belfast has commenced this week.

This scheme, which is part of the Belfast Cycling Network, includes a 2-way segregated cycle track and new traffic calming features along Island Street between the Underpass on Ballymacarrett Road and the junction of Island Street and Dee Street. The scheme will link to existing cycling facilities on Middlepath Street leading into the City Centre and to the Ballymacarrett Walkway linking to Connswater and Comber Greenways.

Announcing the scheme Minister Kimmins said:

“This scheme represents a significant investment in active travel infrastructure in the east of the city and further demonstrates my ongoing commitment to walking, wheeling and cycling . Schemes such as this provide safer, healthier and environmentally friendly transport choices for people who wish to leave the car behind for some of their shorter everyday journeys. I would like to thank the public for  their patience and cooperation while these works are being completed.”

To help ensure the safety of road workers and the public, it will be necessary to implement temporary traffic management arrangements along Ballymacarrett Road and Island Street for the duration of the works. Daily lane closures will be in place along Ballymacarrett Road and Island Street between 17 November and 01 December 2025, and the road will be closed to through traffic from 01 December 2025 to early Spring 2026. At all times access will be maintained for local businesses, residents, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, however road users are asked to comply with all temporary signage in place.
