Kimmins announces £380,000 resurfacing scheme for A5 route in Omagh

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £380,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A5 route including Great Northern Road, Derry Road Roundabout and the Beltany Road in Omagh will commence on Monday 7 September 2026.
The resurfacing scheme extends for approximately 700 metres from Gortrush Industrial Estate junction to 20 Beltany Road.
Minister Kimmins said:
“This is a substantial investment of £380,000 for the A5 route and the Omagh area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme, it will be necessary to implement temporary traffic management arrangements, from Monday 7 September 2026 until Sunday 20 September 2026, as detailed below:
- Full overnight road closure in operation from Monday 7 September 2026 until Sunday 20 September 2026 between the hours 8.00 pm to 7.00 am.
- The respective carriageways will be open to traffic each day between the hours 7.00 am to 8.00 pm.
During the road closure period, signed diversionary routes will be in place via: -
From Monday 7 September 2026 to Sunday 13 September 2026
Diversion Northbound (to Strabane): A5 Great Northern Road – A32 Railway Link Road - A32 Dromore Road – A32 Clanabogan Road - B4 Drumlish Road - B84 Dooish Road - B50 Omagh Road – B50 Main Street, Drumquin – B50 Castlederg Road – B50 Drumquin Road – B72 Castlegore Road – B72 Lower Strabane Road, Castlederg – B72 Strabane Road - B72 Fyfin Road – A5 Mulvin Road.
Diversion Southbound (to Omagh): A5 Great Northern Way – B46 Plumbridge Road – B46 Killymore Road B48 - Gortin – B48 Glenpark Road – B46 Gortin Road – B48 Mountjoy Road – B48 Drumragh Avenue – B4 Market Street – B4 Campsie Road – A505 Campsie Roundabout – A505 Crevenagh Road – A5 Crevenagh Roundabout – A5 Great Northern Road.
Diversion to/from Drumquin: A5 Great Northern Road – A32 Railway Link Road - A32 Dromore Road – A32 Clanabogan Road - B4 Drumlish Road - B84 Dooish Road to Crooked Bridge junction with B50 Omagh Road and vice versa.
Diversion from Derry Road to A5 Great Northern Road: Use C667 Brookmount Road.
Diversion from A5 Great Northern Road to Derry Road: Use A32 Railway Link Road, U3005 James Street, U3000 Church Street and U3000 Castle Street.
From Monday 14 September 2026 to Sunday 20 September 2026
Diversion Northbound (to Strabane): A5 Great Northern Road – B50 Gillygooley Road - B50 Omagh Road – Main Street, Drumquin - B50 Castlederg Road - B50 Drumquin Road - B72 Castlegore Road, B72 Lower Strabane Road, Castlederg – B72 Strabane Road - B72 Fyfin Road - A5 Mulvin Road
Diversion Southbound (to Omagh): A5 Great Northern Way – B46 Plumbridge Road – B46 Killymore Road B48 - Gortin – B48 Glenpark Road – B46 Gortin Road – U1528 Strathroy Road – B48 Strathroy Link Road – B48 Derry Road – A5 Great Northern Road.
Motorists wishing to access business premises between the Derry Road Roundabout and Newtownstewart during the road closures should use the Northbound diversion and use the A5 route from Victoria Bridge.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, however, while measures have been taken to accommodate local access, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Sunday 20 September 2026, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change.
