Public Information Event for Eglinton Flood Alleviation Scheme

A public information event on the proposed Eglinton Flood Alleviation Scheme has been organised for Thursday 17 September 2026 at Eglinton Community Hall.
The Eglinton Flood Alleviation Scheme has reached a significant milestone with approval of the outline business case including identification of a preferred option to reduce flood risk for the area. This public information event will offer residents, business owners and other interested stakeholders the opportunity to view the proposed flood alleviation measures, provide feedback and discuss the scheme directly with representatives from the project team and the Department prior to the next step which is to commence the detailed design stage.
Minister Kimmins said:
“The Eglinton Flood Alleviation Scheme has taken an important step forward with approval of the Outline Business case. This identifies a preferred option to reduce flood risk from multiple sources affecting Eglinton village and the terminal building at City of Derry Airport. The scheme has the potential to reduce flood risk to approximately 100 residential and 33 non-residential properties.
“This public information event will offer a useful opportunity for people to come along and chat with my officials, view the proposals and provide important feedback on the proposed measures and I encourage people to attend.”
The Minister concluded: “I am committed to finding both long term hard engineering solutions whilst simultaneously progressing interim measures such as the ten “leaky dams” that were installed at Muff Glen Forest. I visited these last year and saw firsthand how these complementary nature-based solutions mimic natural processes by temporarily storing water during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce the speed and volume of flows downstream to mitigate against flood risk. This helps to reduce the risk of flooding whilst protecting the quality of our rivers and loughs.
“I hope this demonstrates my ongoing commitment to progressing practical longer term and interim flood alleviation solutions.”
