Consultation description
The Ravenhill Road/ Ormeau Embankment scheme will provide high quality pedestrian and cycling facilities, improving connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians. The scheme will link communities in South Belfast from Rosetta and the Ravenhill Road to the proposed Lagan Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge and into Belfast City Centre.
As part of the improvements, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) proposes to make an Order titled The Control of Traffic (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 2026. The Order will -
- remove waiting restrictions on a length of Ravenhill Road;
- amend existing cycle lanes and cycle tracks on lengths of Ormeau Embankment, Ormeau Road and Ravenhill Road;
- provide a segregated one-way cycle track on a length of Ormeau Embankment;
- provide segregated two-way cycle tracks on lengths of Ormeau Embankment and a length of Ravenhill Road; and
- provide shared footway/cycle tracks in the Ormeau Embankment and Ravenhill Road areas.
Also as part of the improvements, DfI proposes to make an Order entitled The Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 3) Order (Northern Ireland) 2026. The Order will :–
- apply a 30 miles per hour speed limit to a length of Ormeau Embankment, Belfast;
- apply a 40 miles per hour speed limit to a length of Ormeau Embankment, Belfast; and
- revoke a speed limit relating to Ormeau Embankment, Belfast.
In addition, under ‘Article 65’ of the ‘Roads (Northern Ireland) Order 1993’, DfI proposes the installation of traffic calming measures on all minor road accesses that junction with the Ravenhill Road, Belfast to control the speed of traffic. All proposed flat top road humps are included on the Control of Traffic (Belfast) Order 2026 map.
