  • Resurfacing scheme for Callanbridge Road/Nursery Road, Armagh to commence

    • Road users

    Date published: 15 July 2020

A £230,000 road improvement scheme on Callanbridge Road/ Nursery Road Armagh is due to commence on Monday 20 July.

The scheme includes resurfacing and new street lighting. An opportunity has also been taken to widen the existing footway on Nursery Road to provide a shared footway/cycleway as part of a wider cycle plan for Armagh. This will enhance active travel opportunities in the area and link in with an existing off road cycle route.

The improvement work will extend a distance of approximately one kilometre from the junction of Nursery Road with the Killylea Road to the Callanbridge Road junction with the Battleford Road. The carriageway will be resurfaced and road drainage upgraded. The scheme will provide 340 metres of new combined footway/cycle track on Nursery Road from its junction with the A28 Killylea Road and linking to National Cycle Network Route 91 at Callan Bridge / Windmill Hill, as well as 400 metres of new street lighting on Nursery Road.

Due to the nature of the scheme it will be necessary to operate a daily weekday road closure (Monday – Friday) between the hours of 8.00 am and 6.00 pm from Monday 20 July to Friday 21 August 2020. During these times a diversion will be in place with traffic being diverted via Killylea Road, Ballycrummy Road and Battleford Road. The road will be open to traffic in the evenings during the week and all day Saturday and Sunday. Local access for residents will be maintained at all times during the works.

The Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimise inconvenience to the public. Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to follow the alternative routes which will be clearly signed on the approaches to the closure.

Completion of the work by 21 August 2020 is dependent on favourable weather conditions. The Department will keep the public informed of any change. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
