Mallon welcomes commencement of Phase 1 further upgrade work to the Comber Greenway

Date published: 21 March 2022

The first phase of upgrade works to the rural stretch of the Comber Greenway will commence on Monday 28 March 2022. This utilises the existing Comber Greenway from Billy Neill Soccer School of Excellence for approximately 370 metres towards Comber. The estimated cost of the scheme is £100,000.

Lane closure during resurfacing work

The work will involve widening this stretch of existing greenway from 3 metres to 4 metres, to provide an upgraded footway and cycleway. The work will take approximately six weeks to complete.

Welcoming the commencement of works, Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said:

“This scheme is part of my commitment to the delivery of active travel schemes across the North and to making walking, wheeling and cycling a safer and more attractive option for people getting around.

This latest widening scheme will complement the widening already undertaken by the Department on the urban section between Holywood Arches and Billy Neill country park which has seen a large increase in numbers using it during the Covid pandemic.”

Commenting on other enhancements along the Greenway, Minister Mallon added:

“I am also pleased to announce the commencement of a pilot scheme to install wayfinding signage between Knock Road and East Link Road which will assist locals and visitors  when using the Comber Greenway as part of their daily commute, exercise routine or simply to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

“I have also already given my commitment to introduce a pilot lighting scheme along the urban section with installation work due to commence over the summer.

“I am delighted that the upgrades being delivered on Comber Greenway will greatly enhance opportunities for active travel.”

Users of the facility are advised that a closure of the footway and cycleway will be required to facilitate the construction process and to take extra care in the vicinity of the works.

The Department apologises for any inconvenience that may be associated with the works and would like to thank users, in advance, for their tolerance during the construction process. The dates and duration of the works will be dependent on favourable weather conditions. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and safety advice with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
