Department for Infrastructure - Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies (MVRUS) Moped Grant Scheme
Date published:
The Minister for Infrastructure is committed to improving road safety. The Department has a statutory duty to promote road safety and within the context of the Northern Ireland Road Safety Strategy does this through a wide range of road safety education schemes and resources.
The Motor Vehicle and Road User Studies GCSE helps prepare students to become responsible road users. Students develop knowledge of the highway code, driving in adverse conditions as well as causes and prevention of road traffic collisions. They carry out a practical riding activity on a moped and investigate real-life traffic situations. They discover road users’ responsibilities and legal requirements and also explore motor vehicle and road user theory.
The GCSE in MVRUS is a direct way of influencing the road safety skills and behaviours of young people as they prepare to travel independently.
The Department’s role is to support schools delivering this GCSE subject by providing funding specifically for the purchase of a moped to be used for the practical riding activity.
The MVRUS GCSE Grant Scheme is now open for applications. The closing date for applications is 13 November 2026.
Completed applications should be sent to: motorvehicleandroaduserstudies@infrastructure-ni.gov.uk

To note. Additional funding is available to schools who might require textbooks for the theory aspect of the course, helmets and hi-vis vests for Health & Safety and a jerry can, lock and foot pump for maintenance of the moped.
