Road realignment and new traffic signals for Banbridge town centre

A £400,000 road realignment and traffic signals scheme is due to commence in Banbridge town centre on Monday 11 October 2021.

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said:

“This investment of £400,000 to realign a staggered junction and install traffic signals at the Scarva Street / Downshire Place / Commercial Road junction will aid pedestrian road safety and traffic progression at this busy route in Banbridge town centre.  This will benefit all who use it including businesses and residents in the area. I would like to thank the travelling public and local residents in advance for their cooperation while these much needed works are completed.”

Scarva Street is a key route into the town centre from the Scarva Road whilst the Commercial Road / Downshire Place staggered junction serves as a by-pass for HGVs to avoid the low bridge in the centre of town. 

Work is due to begin on Monday 11 October 2021 and will be completed by the end of February 2022, however this will be dependent on the progress of the scheme and on favourable weather conditions.

These works were planned with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council in advance of their proposed public realm scheme for Banbridge to minimise potential disruption.

Due to the nature of the scheme, it will be necessary to operate a number of traffic management measures for the duration of the works. These measures will include one way closures mainly operating from Monday to Friday between the hours of 09.30hrs to 16.30hrs as well as road closures at various times.

During these times a diversion will be in place as detailed below:

• Scarva Street Eastbound: Reilly Street or Downshire Place, Huntly Road, Church Square, Bridge Street
• Scarva Street Westbound: Bridge Street or Downshire Place, Huntly Road, Reilly Street
• Commercial Road: Linenhall Street/Ballygowan Road, Edenderry Road
• Downshire Place: Huntly Road, Reilly Street

In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling through, or in the vicinity, of the works.

Whilst the Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public, drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys in the area.
