The proposals are part of the Planning Improvement Programme (PIP) being brought forward by the Department, working closely with local government and partners, to improve current processes and the performance and delivery of the planning system.

They would introduce revisions and changes to the Classes and Thresholds in the Schedule to the Planning (Development Management) Regulations (NI) 2015.

Announcing the consultation the Infrastructure Minister Kimmins said:

“Planning matters affect everyone, and the Department is continually seeking opportunities to make positive changes to legislation to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the planning system."

"This consultation, launched today as part of the review of the Development Management Regulations, proposes changes to development classes and thresholds. The aim is to ensure they reflect current and emerging development trends and support more efficient processing of different types of development proposals within the planning system."

"I would encourage everyone with an interest in planning matters to respond.”

The consultation will run for 8 weeks until 5.00pm on the 9 October 2026, and the Department welcomes views from all interested parties.
