The improvement work includes resurfacing of the carriageway, upgrading of road drainage and realignment of kerbs and crossing points.

To help ensure the safety of those using the road and to facilitate the works, it will be necessary to operate a series of daily road closures commencing on Monday 31 July 2023 for 5 weeks.

An alternative route will be signed with traffic being diverted as follows:

    Catherine Street Closure

Traffic travelling towards Canal Street will be diverted via Edward Street, Merchants Quay and Canal Street.

Traffic travelling towards Monaghan Street will be diverted via Canal Street, New Street, Trevor Hill -Kildare Street, Monaghan Street and Lower Catherine Street.

    Edward Street Closure

Traffic will be diverted via Lower Catherine Street, Monaghan Street and Merchants Quay

The road will be open to traffic during evenings and weekends with local access for residents and emergency services being maintained at all times, although some delays may be experienced.

The Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimise inconvenience to the public. Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey.

Completion of the work by 31 August 2023 is dependent on favourable weather conditions. The Department will keep the public informed of any change. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
