Resurfacing scheme and enhanced pedestrian and cyclist facilities for Larne Road Link Dual Carriageway, Ballymena

The scheme commences on Monday 11 January 2021.

The 0.44 kilometre scheme extends from Bridge Street to Braidwater (Sainsbury’s) Roundabout on the country bound dual carriageway and is expected to be completed by Friday 5 February 2021. As part of this scheme the current hard shoulder is to be replaced with a raised kerb and a combined cycle lane/pedestrian footway. This will provide enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Minister Mallon said:

“The Larne Road Link is a busy thoroughfare for local people as they go about their daily lives in cars, on bikes and on foot. This much needed investment will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of all who use it.

“I am committed to increasing the opportunities for active travel and I am pleased that space is being provided in this scheme for people who want to walk and cycle. This is one of many similar schemes which will greatly enhance the cycling infrastructure within the Ballymena area for future generations.”

To facilitate the works, it will be necessary to introduce a lane closure on Larne Road Link (Monday to Friday) between the hours of 7.00 am and 6.00 pm from Wednesday 6 January 2021 until Friday 5 February 2021. A full road closure will be required on Larne Road Link from 7.00 pm Saturday 23 January 2021 until 6.00 pm Sunday 24 January 2021 and from 7.00 am until 6.00 pm on Sunday 31 January 2021. During these times a diversion will be in operation via Bridge Street, Harryville Bridge, Henry Street, Larne Street, Larne Road and Larne Road Link.

The Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimise inconvenience to the public. Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to follow any alternative routes which will be clearly signed on the approaches to the works.

In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to take extra care when travelling in the vicinity of the works.

Completion by Friday 5 February 2021 is dependent on favourable weather conditions, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and safety advice with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
