£1million LED relighting scheme at A2, from Ballyrobert Road to Springhill Road, Bangor

Work to replace the existing lighting scheme which is over 40 years old with new new LED lighting technology will take three to four months to complete. This will improve the quality of street lighting along this key arterial route, increase reliability and reduce the need for disruptive maintenance visits which will reduce both energy and maintenance costs.

This scheme will be carried out in conjunction with a similar lighting replacement scheme which commenced at the start of July at the Springhill intersection where the existing high mast units are being replaced with conventional lighting columns also using LED light sources.

Traffic management arrangements will be in place throughout the period of the works which will be completed in sections and will not be carried out during rush hour periods on week days. Lane closures will be required at each section of the works. The initial lane closures will take place around the Ballyrobert junction and will be required as soon as the works start on 7 August 2017. Further lane closures will keep pace with the ongoing works along the A2 towards the Springhill intersection.

Limited road closures over a period of three to four days will be required at the Springhill intersection to safely remove the existing high masts. This will take place in the evening and will be timed to avoid conflict with the works along the A2. The roads involved in the closures are those around the Springhill intersection itself ie the Belfast Road (A2) and the West Circular Road where it crosses over the Belfast Road. Diversion routes will be signposted during these periods

The dates and duration of the road closures will be dependent on the progress of the scheme, on favourable weather conditions and other ongoing works in the area. In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling through, or in the vicinity, of the works.

The Department has carefully programmed the works operations in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public, however motorists should be aware that some delays may be expected and that additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.
