  • Launch of recruitment competition for Chair of Belfast Harbour Commissioners

    The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Minister Nichola Mallon has announced a recruitment campaign to appoint a Chair to Belfast Harbour Commissioners (BHC).

    Minister Mallon said:

    “Belfast Port is a vital, globally connected maritime gateway. This key post offers an excellent opportunity for an individual to make a real and valued impact as the Chair of Belfast Harbour Commissioners. The Chair will be responsible for leading the Board’s strategic direction, ensuring high standards of corporate governance and engaging with my Department and other key stakeholders, thus ensuring the continued growth of this important port.”

    The time commitment for the post is anticipated at 2 business days per week. The Chair will be expected to attend all Board meetings and other ad hoc meetings as required. The Chair will receive remuneration of £54,659 and reasonable travel and subsistence costs.

    The appointment will be effective from 1 July 2021 and will run for a period of up to four years.

    Applications will be welcomed from all sections of the community.

    Women, younger people, people with disabilities and people from ethnic minority communities are currently under-represented on DfI Boards. Applications from members of these groups would be particularly welcome.

    Notes to editors:

    1. DfI is running the recruitment competition in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments, Northern Ireland (CPANI) Code of Practice.
    2. The appointment will be made on merit and political activity will play no part in the selection process.
    3. The Department for Infrastructure does not appoint board members automatically to a second term. All appointments are made through open competition
    4. The Constitution of the Commissioners is set out in Schedule 1 of the Belfast Harbour Order (Northern Ireland) 2002.  The Order provides that the Commissioners shall consist of not less than ten and no more than 15 persons who shall be appointed by the Department for a period of four years or such lesser period as the Department may determine.
