Date published:
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £680,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on A1002 Strand Road, Derry City will commence on Monday 16 February 2026.
The resurfacing scheme will involve the full resurfacing of 750 metres of the 4-lane carriageway from Queens Quay Roundabout to Meadowbank Avenue. The works will also include structural carriageway patching at specific locations and resurfacing of parts of the adjoining footway network. Initial work will commence on the footway repairs followed by the on-carriageway works in the later stages.
Minister Kimmins said:
“This is a substantial investment for Derry City which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
The first phase of the work to undertake footway repairs will involve moving lane closures along the entire length of the scheme. To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme, it will be necessary to implement lane closures daily, Monday to Friday between the hours of 9.30 am and 4.30 pm from Monday 16 February. A road closure will be required for the resurfacing element. More details on the road closure will be published as the works progress.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience however, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by the end of April 2026, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change.
