Strabane Footbridge
The Strabane town centre footbridge is part of a wider programme of work for Strabane regeneration which will be funded through the Derry/Londonderry and Strabane Region City Deal (DSRCD).
As part of the City Deal, Strabane town centre will be revitalised through the creation of new physical infrastructure centred around the historic Canal Basin.
The Strabane Town Centre Regeneration represents an investment of £102 million. An Outline Business Case for the footbridge was recently approved and the current estimate for the footbridge project is £10.4 million.
This project aims to construct a new Strabane Footbridge across the Mourne River to enhance active travel access. Although termed as a footbridge, it is designed for use by both pedestrians and cyclists at all times. An important feature of the Footbridge will be its role in enhancing connectivity to and from the bus station, connecting with existing public footways and desire lines through O’Nolan Park and Bradley Way to the west, and providing access to Main Street and the Town Centre to the east via steps and ramped footways.
The proposed landing points of the bridge will be positioned east of Strabane Town Centre, between the existing Mourne and Strabane bridges. This new infrastructure will connect the western and eastern banks of the Mourne River, providing pedestrian and cyclist access to various amenities, employment opportunities, and recreational facilities. It will also complement the anticipated benefits of the Canal Basin Regeneration Scheme, the Riverine masterplan, and the proposed bus station expansion and park-and-ride.
