    Date published: 23 February 2026

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £355,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme for Chichester Street and Victoria Street, Belfast will commence on Monday 23 February 2026.

    Resurfacing work

The scheme will extend from Upper Arthur Street to Victoria Street on Chichester Street, and from May Street to Victoria Square Shopping Centre on Victoria Street.

    Minister Kimmins said:

“This substantial investment of £355,000 for Belfast City Centre will deliver significant benefits for road users and demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank all road users for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”

To facilitate the scheme, it will be necessary to implement full overnight road closures on Chichester Street and Victoria Street.

The closures will be in place overnight (Sunday to Thursday) from 9.00 pm until 6.00 am from 23 February until 12 March 2026. Some additional off-peak lane closures may also be required.

During periods of closure diversion routes will operate via: May Street, Donegall Square South, Howard Street, College Square East, College Avenue, Millfield, Carrickhill, Fredrick Street, Great Patrick Street, and Dunbar Link.

In addition, Wellington Place, Donegall Square North and Upper Arthur Street will also be closed when the work is ongoing.

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience to road users. However, whilst steps have been taken to accommodate local access,  road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works. Road users are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works are anticipated to be completed by 12 March 2026.The Department will however keep the public informed of any change.
