Kimmins announces £150,000 traffic signals scheme for A2 East Circular Road, Bangor
Date published:
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced an investment of £150,000 to introduce a Puffin crossing on the A2 East Circular Road, near St Columbanus College in Bangor.
This new 2 stage Puffin crossing will improve road safety for pedestrians and school children crossing this heavily trafficked A class Road in Bangor.
Minister Kimmins said: “This substantial investment of £150,000 for North Down will ensure that residents, school children and road users who travel on this road will benefit through significant safety improvements when crossing this A Class dual carriageway around Bangor which carries approximately 10,000 vehicles per day. This investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
Work is due to begin on Monday 5 January 2025 and expected to be completed by the end of March 2025, however this will be dependent on the progress of the scheme and on favourable weather conditions. The majority of the work will be carried out off peak, to minimise any inconvenience to commuter traffic.
To undertake the work safely, it will be necessary to undertake a series of single lane closures for the duration of the works from Monday to Friday between the hours of 09.30 hrs to 16.30 hrs. There may be occasions when full road closures are required to complete the work but these will be arranged at quieter times to minimise disruption and the public will be notified in advance.
In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling through, or in the vicinity, of the works.
While the Department has programmed most of the work to be carried out off peak, drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys in the area.

Notes to editors:
- PUFFIN stands for Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent Crossing. PUFFINS have the red/green man on the push button unit beside the pedestrian; there is no flashing amber signal to drivers – they are held on a red signal until pedestrians have completed their crossing and the time for pedestrians to cross the road can be extended by sensors which detect people still on the crossing.
- Drivers also benefit from PUFFINS when a pedestrian pushes the push button and then moves away, the demand for the green man is cancelled so drivers do not experience an unnecessary delay.
- The Executive Information Service operates an out of hours service for media enquiries only between 1800hrs and 0800hrs Monday to Friday and at weekends and public holidays. The duty press officer can be contacted on 028 9037 8110.
