  • Weekend road closures required as work progresses at Strule Shared Education Campus

    Date published: 18 May 2026

Full weekend road closures will be in place over a number of weekends in May and June to allow for resurfacing works on Mountjoy road, Old Mountfield road and Lisanelly Avenue in Omagh.

The Department for Infrastructure confirms that the current road works on the Mountjoy Road/Gortin Road are continuing to progress towards the contract completion date of October 2026.

The carriageway improvement scheme will deliver a significant upgrade to the local road network and are an integral part of the Department of Education’s work to develop the Strule Shared Education Campus (SSEC).

The works on the road commenced late last year and have been developed to help address the anticipated increase in pedestrian, public transport and vehicle traffic and movement in relation to the operation of the new Campus. When complete the new infrastructure will provide an important link to the Campus from the north and west of the town.  The work builds on that already delivered at the Strathroy Link Road completed in November 2019.

There are now proposals to resurface the Junction of Mountjoy Road, Old Mountfield Road and Lisanelly Avenue.

In order to complete this work, there will be three weekend full road closures required.

The dates and times of the closures will be as follows:

    • Saturday 23 May from 6.00 am until 6.00 pm
    • Friday 5 June from 8.00 pm until Monday 8 June at 6.00 am
    • Saturday 20 June from 6.00 am until Monday 22 June at 6.00 am.

Please note the road will be closed continuously over these periods.

During this closure a signed diversion will be in place as follows:

Main Diversion: Mountjoy Road, Gortin Road, Strathroy Road, Strathroy Link Road, Derry Road, Abbey Street, McConnell Place, Sedan Avenue and vice versa.

Local Diversion: Old Mountfield Road, Killyclogher Road, Campsie Road, Market Street, Drumragh Avenue and vice versa.

The Department has worked closely with the SSEC Contractor to ensure that these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimize inconvenience to the public.  Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to follow the alternative routes which will be clearly signed on the approaches to the closure.  Access for emergency services, property owners and deliveries will be accommodated.

Completion of the work is subject to favorable weather conditions; however, the Department will keep the public informed of any change.  All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.

The Department and the Contractor would like to thank you for your patience as we deliver these critical road improvements.
