    Date published: 9 October 2024

A carriageway resurfacing scheme in the immediate vicinity of the Strangford Lough ferry service slipway in Portaferry will commence on Monday 14 October 2024.

Image of resurfacing work being carried out

The resurfacing scheme will involve the asphalt resurfacing of 650 metres of carriageway including The Strand, Castle Street, 200 metres of Loughshore Road and the ferry service turning circle and queuing area.

This work has been planned in coordination with the temporary suspension of the Strangford Lough ferry service while essential health and safety work is carried out on the slipway. The suspension of service will enable resurfacing of the main access roads to the ferry service in Portaferry which will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of all who use it including businesses and residents in the areas. This combined effort will limit further disruption and delays to road / ferry users in this area in the future.

To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme it will be necessary to implement daily road closures from Ferry Steet to Loughshore Road from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday, commencing Monday 14 October to Friday 15 November 2024. The road will be open to traffic overnight and at the weekends.

During these times there will be a signed diversionary route via Shore Road, Cook Street, Ballyblack Road, Ballyphilip Road, Cloughey Road, High Street and The Square.

Local access for residents and emergency services will be maintained at all times, however some minor delays may be experienced.

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, however, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions all work will be completed by 15 November 2024, however, the Department will keep the public informed of any change.

All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
