A road improvement scheme for the Mealough Road and its junction with the A24 Saintfield Road commenced on Monday 24 May 2021.

The improvement work, which will be  carried out by developers following planning permission for a new residential development on the Mealough Road,  includes widening the A24 Saintfield Road, realignment of the Mealough Road and improvement to the traffic signals including pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities.

To ensure the safety of road users and workers it will be necessary to operate a number of off peak road and lane closures. A temporary speed limit will also be in operation.

The C298 Mealough Road will be closed from Monday 7 June 2021 for approximately 12 weeks from its junction with the Saintfield Road, to the entrance of 6 Mealough Road. Access and egress to all facilities at Let’s Go Hydro will remain accessible from Saintfield Road.

Daily off-peak lane closures will also commence on the Saintfield Road from Monday 7 June 2021 between the hours of 9.30 am and 4.30 pm with localised pedestrian diversions utilising the existing signal-controlled crossing points. Further traffic management stages will be communicated as work progresses.

Whilst the Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management with the contractor in order to minimise inconvenience to the public, road users should expect some delays and allow additional time when planning a journey.

Road users are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling through the works. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

The scheme is expected to be substantially complete by December 2021.
