Minister Mallon signs off on initial £2.9million Flood Alleviation Scheme for Newry

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has signed the Confirmation Order to allow a £2.9 million Phase one river Flood Alleviation Scheme in Newry to proceed.

The procurement process to appoint a contractor for the scheme has commenced.

Minister Mallon said:

“I have seen first-hand the devastation flooding can cause. This initial scheme will cost around £2.9 million to implement and will provide flood alleviation to residential and commercial properties located at Armagh Road, Downshire Road, Craigmore Way and Greenbank Industrial Estate, Newry. I hope this brings some comfort to people in Newry.”

Phase one of the scheme is expected to commence in 2021/22. The remaining significant works identified for the main Newry River / Canal and upstream flood storage are being progressed through two further phases.

Notes to editors: 

1. The Phase One works include upgrading sections of the existing Armagh Road Drain culvert, an upgraded inlet grille on the Armagh Road Drain, upgrading the existing Downshire Stream culvert, and construction of flood walls and embankments along the Knox-Pebbles Drain at Greenbank Industrial Estate.
