Minister Kimmins announces £868,000 resurfacing scheme for A2 Belfast Road, Carrickfergus.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a £868,000 resurfacing scheme on the A2 Belfast Road, Carrickfergus commenced on Monday 21 September 2026.
The scheme begins at Tongue Loanen junction and extends towards Whitehead for approximately 2.44km, ending approximately 530m beyond Raw Brae Road.
It is anticipated that the scheme will last for a duration of 6 weeks, with an expected completion date of Friday 30 October 2026. This road will be closed to traffic between the hours of 09:30hrs to 18:00hrs Monday to Friday.
The infrastructure minister said:
“This is a substantial investment for the Carrickfergus area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme, it will be necessary to implement a road closure between Kilroot Business Park and Quay Lane. During the road closure, a signed diversionary routes will be in place via:
- Diversion 1 (for car and light commercial vehicles): B149 Beltoy Road – B90 Dalways Bawn Road – B90 Bridgend Road – B90 Main Street – B90 Island Road and vice versa.
- Diversion 2 (for HGSV traffic): B58 Davys Street – B58 Minorca Place – B58 Ellis Street – B58 Woodburn Road – C111 Woodburn Road – B90 Middle Road – B58 New Line Road – B99 Watch Hill Road – B99 Waterfall Road – B100 Ballyrickard Road – A8 Belfast Road – A8 Ballymena Road – A8 Harbour Highway – A2 Harbour Highway – U4085 Ramp Road – A2 Circular Road – A2 Bank Road – A2 Main Road – A2 Shore Road – A2 Larne Road and vice versa.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. However, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access throughout the scheme, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Friday 30 October 2026; however, the Department will keep the public informed of any change.
