Minister Kimmins announces £816,000 road improvement scheme for Ballyrobin Road, Killead

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £816,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the Ballyrobin Road, Killead has commenced.
The resurfacing scheme will extend approximately two kilometres from the A26 Killead Roundabout to the A57 Airport Roundabout.
Minister Kimmins said:
“This is a substantial investment for the Antrim area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.
“This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of residents, businesses and those travelling in the Antrim area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 30 October 2026. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme, it will be necessary to implement both lane and road closures, which will be operational from as follows:
- Monday 28 September to Friday 1 October 2026: Lane closure from 9.30am to 4.30pm hrs, with traffic controlled via temporary traffic signals.
- Monday 5 October to Friday 9 October 2026: Full road closure each night between 7pm and 6am (Airport Roundabout to Killead Roundabout).
- Monday 12 October to Friday 16 October 2026: Full road closure each night between 7pm and 6am (Airport Roundabout to Killead Roundabout).
- Monday 19 October to Friday 23 October 2026: Full road closure each night between 7pm and 6am (Airport Roundabout to Killead Roundabout).
- Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October 2026: Lane closure from 9.30am to 4.30pm, with traffic controlled via temporary traffic signals.
During the road closures, a signed diversionary route will be in place as follows:- traffic approaching the airport from Killead Roundabout will be diverted via A26 Oldstone Road / A6 Belfast Road / A6 Belmont Road / A57 Dublin Road. A second diversion for HGV Traffic will be signed via A57 Ballyrobin Road / A6 Antrim and Belfast Road / A6 Belmont Road / A57 Dublin Road to avoid the low bridge on Oldstone Road.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. While steps have been taken to accommodate local access and Translink bus and school services throughout the scheme, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works, particularly if travelling to the airport. Road users are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
