Kimmins reminds all those attending The Open to plan ahead and take extra care on the roads

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has reminded those attending The 153rd Open in Portrush to plan their journey, use public transport if possible, and drive and park safely and responsibly.
Minister Kimmins said:
“This is an exciting time for all of us, and in particular golf fans, as The Open has returned to Portrush. This will be the largest ever sporting event held in the north with almost 280,000 fans expected to attend across the week. We have already seen people flock to Portrush in recent days for the practice rounds with many more due to attend when play starts tomorrow. This is a huge boost for the local economy and will showcase the stunning scenery on the north coast.
“My Departmental officials have been working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team preparing for the delivery of The Open and a huge amount of work has been carried out by all partners to ensure a traffic and transport plan is in place. I would like to thank all those involved in this important work.
“I urge all those attending to plan their journey in advance, leave plenty of time and be patient. Where possible, I would encourage people to use public transport services. Translink has put in place an extensive transport plan with enhanced scheduled services and additional coach, bus and train services. Passengers should check the journey planner app or visit their website www.translink.co.uk to plan their journey in advance.
“If you are driving to the event please drive with due care and attention, leave extra time for your journey and abide by all temporary traffic arrangements in place. All public parking will be located at The Open Park and Ride facilities where dedicated buses will be available to transport spectators to the course. I would also ask people to be respectful to residents and businesses in the surrounding areas by parking legally and responsibly. Please do not block driveways, pavements or junctions as this can cause a road safety risk particularly to people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and those pushing prams.
“I am also aware that given the many attractions on the north coast there will also be the usual summer visitors who are not attending the event. I would ask everyone to be mindful of the increased volume of vehicles and pedestrians in the area. If we all follow the information and advice from the event organisers and statutory partners, it will help to ensure the event runs smoothly and that everyone can arrive and return home again safely.”
