Kimmins announces £752,000 Active Travel scheme for Foreglen, Dungiven

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that work on a £752,000 active travel scheme on the Glenshane Road, Dungiven, commenced on Monday 7 September 2026.
The scheme will provide a shared footway/cycleway approximately 630 metres along the Glenshane Road, beginning at Dungiven Bridge and finishing opposite the junction with Feeny Road. As part of the works, a new uncontrolled crossing will also be installed before Feeny Road junction. It will also include a 400 metre footway link on the southern side of the Foreglen Road from Owenbeg GAA to The Old School Lane.
Minister Kimmins said:
“I am pleased that the new footway/cycle track and footway being delivered through this scheme in Dungiven. This forms part of my commitment to increasing opportunities for active travel. The scheme will enhance accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists by connecting to existing and planned future infrastructure, to complete a 14km active travel route linking the communities of Claudy, Foreglen, Dernaflaw and Dungiven."
“I would like to thank the public and residents in advance for their cooperation and ask that they comply with all temporary traffic restrictions while these works are being completed.”
To facilitate the works, temporary traffic management will be in place from 7 September 2026 for a period of 12 weeks.
The Department has programmed the works and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. However, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional travel time when journeying through the area.
Completion of the work within 12 weeks is subject to favourable weather conditions, however, the Department will keep the public informed of any changes.
