    Date published: 26 January 2026

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £720,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on A23 Ballygowan Road, Belfast will commence on Monday 9 February 2026.

The scheme will include essential resurfacing works from Upper Knockbreda Road to Manse Road and improvements to kerbs and footways, delivering long-term benefits for residents, businesses and commuters by improving the quality and safety of the road network.

    Minister Kimmins said:

“This is a substantial investment which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users and demonstrates my commitment to improving our roads, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”

To minimise disruption during peak traffic periods, the resurfacing works will be carried out over a series of weekends between Friday 27 February and Sunday 29 March 2026.

On each of these weekends, the road will be closed from 6.00 pm Friday until 6.00 am Monday, with one lane in the country-bound direction maintained until 6:30 pm on Saturday.  During road closures a signed diversion route will be in place via Upper Knockbreda Road, Saintfield Road, Cairnshill Road and Manse Road.

The Department has programmed the works operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. However, whilst steps have been taken to accommodate local access, road users should expect some delays and allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works. Road users should also comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions, it is anticipated that the works will be substantially complete by Sunday 29 March 2026. The Department will keep the public informed of any changes.
