  • Kimmins announces £600,000 road improvement scheme for Milltown Road, Belfast

    Date published: 12 January 2026

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £600,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on A55 Milltown Road, Belfast will commence on Friday 30 January 2026.

The resurfacing scheme will extend for approximately 1km from the junction of Belvoir Road towards the junction with Old Milltown Road/Belvoir Drive.

    Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said:

“This is a substantial investment for the strategic road network in Belfast which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users and demonstrates my commitment to improving our roads, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”

To minimise disruption during peak traffic periods, the works will be carried out over four consecutive weekends between Friday 30 January 2026 and Sunday 22 February 2026.

On each of these weekends the A55 Milltown Road will be closed in both directions from 9 pm on Friday night until 6 am on Monday morning. One citybound lane will remain open towards Malone Road on Friday night and on Saturdays until 10pm to accommodate public transport and local access only. This access will be carefully managed by the Department and to minimise disruption all other traffic is advised to avoid the road and follow the signed diversion.

During road closures, a signed diversion route will be in place via Upper Malone Road, Drumbeg Road, Ballylesson Road and Hospital Road.

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. However, whilst steps have been taken to accommodate local access, road users should expect some delays and should allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works. Road users should also comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions, it is anticipated that the works will be substantially complete by Sunday 22 February 2026.

The Department will however keep the public informed of any change.
