Kimmins announces £557,000 road improvement scheme for the A2 York Street, Belfast.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £557,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A2 York Street, Belfast will commence on Friday 18 September 2026.
The carriageway resurfacing scheme will extend for a distance of 800 metres from the Brougham Street junction to just beyond the junction of the Limestone Road.
Infrastructure Minister Kimmins said:
“This substantial investment of £557,000 for North Belfast will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users who travel through this area and demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
To facilitate the scheme, it will be necessary to implement road closures over four consecutive weekends.
- From 9.00pm on Friday 18 September 2026 until 6.00 pm on Sunday 20 September 2026
- From 6.00am on Saturday 26 September 2026 until 6.00 pm on Sunday 27 September 2026
- From 9.00pm on Friday 2 October 2026 until 6.00pm on Sunday 4 October 2026
- From 6.00am on Saturday 10 October 2026 until 6.00pm on Sunday 11 October 2026
In addition to these weekend closures, lane closures will be in place on York Street throughout the duration of the works, commencing on Monday 21 September 2026.
During periods of closure a diversion route will operate via Brougham Street and North Queen Street. Road users are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling in the vicinity of the road works.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience however, whilst steps have been taken to accommodate local access, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works. Road users are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works are anticipated to be completed by Friday 16 October 2026. The Department will however keep the public informed of any change.
