    Date published: 23 February 2026

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a £50,000 investment to deliver road safety improvements at the Ballymiscaw Road / Whinney Hill junction at Craigantlet.

The scheme has been developed to improve road user safety at this busy rural junction. The work will involve removing the existing left turn slip lane from Whinney Hill onto Ballymiscaw Road which will reduce conflict points and lower turning speeds.

By simplifying the junction this will deliver a safer junction layout for all road users.

    Minister Kimmins said:

“This £50,000 investment for North Down will provide safer traffic progression for everyone using Craigantlet crossroads, which connects key routes toward Dundonald, Belfast, Holywood, Bangor and Newtownards. Improving road safety remains my priority, and this scheme demonstrates my commitment to creating a safer and more reliable road network for our communities and businesses. I want to thank residents and commuters for their patience as this important work is carried out.”

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday 2 March 2026 and is expected to be completed by Friday 6 March 2026, depending on progress and favourable weather conditions.

To ensure the works can be completed safely, three‑way traffic lights will operate at the Ballymiscaw Road / Whinney Hill junction from Monday to Friday throughout the construction period (including peak times).

The Department is asking the public to drive with extra care, comply with all temporary signage, and be mindful of road workers who will be operating close to live traffic. Due to the nature of the works and their proximity to the junction, traffic delays are expected at times. Drivers are advised to allow additional travel time and plan journeys accordingly.
