    Date published: 13 May 2026

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £250,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A6 Castledawson Roundabout will commence on Monday 18 May 2026.

The resurfacing scheme will also include a short section of the A54 Magherafelt Road.

    Minister Kimmins said:

“This is a substantial investment for the Castledawson and Magherafelt areas which will deliver significant benefits for road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.  I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”

The works at the roundabout will be delivered during these dates and times:

    • Monday 18 to Saturday 23 May – night-time works from 7 pm to 6 am
    • Sunday 24 May – daytime works from 6 am to 7 pm

During these periods, the roundabout will be closed to traffic, however Translink services at the Castledawson Park & Ride site will be facilitated during the night-time work.

To facilitate the final stages of the scheme Translink have agreed to suspend services at Castledawson Park & Share on Sunday 24 May, between 6 am and 7 pm, and those wishing to use Translink services should use Maghera or Toome Park & Ride sites.

Signed diversionary routes during the roads closures will be in place as follows:

Northbound traffic on the A6 Dual for Maghera / Dungiven / Derry will be diverted via the B183 Hillhead Road, Knockloughrim Road, Hillhead Road & Knockloughrim Link Road.

Northbound traffic on the A6 Dual for Magherafelt will be diverted off the A6 Dual and via B183 Hillhead Road, B182 Hillhead Road, Blackpark Road, Creagh Road & B18 Aughrim Road.

Southbound traffic on the A6 Glenshane Road for Castledawson / Magherafelt / Toome / Belfast will be diverted via Knockloughrim Link Road, Hillhead Road & Knockloughrim Road and B183 Hillhead Road.

Magherafelt town and surrounding area traffic wishing to travel to Maghera and beyond should do so via Tobermore.

The A54 Magherafelt Road will also be closed at the roundabout between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm on Monday 25 May with local diversions in operation.

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. However, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access throughout the scheme, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Monday 25 May 2026, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change.
