  • Kimmins announces £ 725,000 road improvement scheme for A22 Killinchy Road, Comber

    Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £725,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A22 Killinchy Road Comber will commence on Monday 2 June 2025.

    The resurfacing scheme will involve the asphalt resurfacing for 1.55 kilometres of the Killinchy Road on the outskirts of Comber, commencing at the Belfast road roundabout on Comber by-pass to a point approximately 100 metres short of Drumhirk Road.

    The Infrastructure Minister said:

    “This is a substantial investment for the Comber area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those travelling in the Comber area. Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 8 August 2025.  I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”

    To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme it will be necessary to implement a number of 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday, road closures from Monday 2 June to Friday 11 July 2025.  Night-time and weekend closures dates to be confirmed at a later stage.

    An alternative diversionary route will be signed with traffic being diverted via:

    A22 Killinchy Road, A22 Comber Road, A22 Killyleagh Road, A22 Cross Street, A22 Catherine Street, A22 Downpatrick Road, A22 Old Belfast Road, A25 New Bridge Street, A7 Belfast Road, A7 Downpatrick Road, A7 Downpatrick Street, A7 Saintfield Road, A7 Crossgar Road, A21 Ballygowan Road, A21 Saintfield Road, A21 Comber Road, A21 Braeside, A21 High Street, A21 Killinchy Street, A21 Newtownards Road

    The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience however, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

    Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will be substantially complete by Friday 8 August 2025. The Department will keep the public informed of any change.
