Kimmins announces commencement of Belfast Cycling Network Scheme

The scheme, which forms part of the Belfast Cycling Network, involves upgrading existing cycling facilities to provide a two-way protected cycle lane. This will connect active travel improvements recently completed as part of the Grand Central Station project to the northern side of Belfast City Centre at College Street. 

Minister Kimmins said:

“This Belfast Cycling Network scheme further demonstrates my commitment to creating safer, more attractive infrastructure for people who choose to walk, wheel or cycle for many of their shorter everyday journeys.

I would like to thank the public and residents in advance for their cooperation and ask that they comply with all temporary traffic restrictions while these works are being completed.”

To help ensure the safety of road workers and the public, and to ensure that the improvements can be completed as efficiently as possible, it will be necessary to implement a temporary one-way closure for northbound traffic on Durham Street and College Square North for the duration of scheme and a diversionary route via Grosvenor Road, College Square East will be signed for motorists.

The Department has programmed the works and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, however road users are asked to comply with all temporary signage in place and to allow additional time when travelling through the area. 

It is anticipated that all work will be completed by early March.

The Department will keep the public informed of any changes.
