Infrastructure Minister announces reappointment of Derry City and Strabane District Councillor to the Board of Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners

Minister John O’Dowd has announced the reappointment of one Councillor to the Board of Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners (LPHC); which has a statutory duty to improve, maintain, regulate, and manage the Foyle Port to facilitate the development of the harbour.
The Minister has reappointed Councillor Christopher Jackson for a second four-year term until 29 February 2028.
Minister O’Dowd said:
“I welcome Councillor Jackson’s continued commitment to Foyle Port. I am confident that his experience will continue to bring great value to the work of the Commissioners.”
The appointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland’s Code of Practice.

- Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners is a Public Trust Port established by legislation. The Commissioners have responsibility, under a series of Harbour Acts and Orders, for developing, maintaining, and operating Foyle Port to the highest standards of efficiency, financial prudence, environmental awareness, safety and security to the benefit of all stakeholders. The Constitution of the Commissioners was established under the Londonderry Harbour Order (Northern Ireland) 2002 (No 41).
- The Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners currently have a membership of a Chair, two Executive Members, four Non-Executive Members and one Councillor Non-Executive Member. There are two Councillor vacancies which will be filled as soon as possible. The Non-Executive Members of the LPHC Board currently receive remuneration of £ 9,326 per annum.
- Councillors are appointed to the Board in line with the Londonderry Harbour Order (Northern Ireland) 2002 and can only serve as a Commissioner if they remain a member of Council. The appointment term is up to a maximum of four years.
- Councillor Jackson is a full-time member of Derry City and Strabane District representing the Waterside Electoral Ward. Christopher is a member of the Planning, Audit and Governance and Strategic planning committees on the council. He was first appointed to the Foyle Port Commissioners Board on 1 March 2020. He holds no other current public appointments.
- All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published. Councillor Jackson has declared that he has undertaken political activity on behalf of Sinn Fein.
