The Department for Infrastructure is launching a Public Consultation on the Road Noise Action Plan Round 4 which is aimed at managing and mitigating road traffic noise.

    Public Consultation Graphic

The Road Noise Action Plan originates from the European Environmental Noise Directive which mandates noise mapping every five years to determine noise exposure and identify areas needing improvement.

Round 4 of noise mapping has been completed this year and the associated Action Plan which addresses noise from a number of major roads is programmed for adoption and publication in 2026.

Ahead of that the Department is seeking views on the draft Action Plan. Further information is available on the departmental website at: https://www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/consultations/environmental-noise-directive-road-noise-action-plan-2023-2028

The consultation starts on 27 November 2025 for 8 weeks and will close at 5pm on Thursday 22 January 2026.

    Notes to editors:

    1. The Road Noise Action Plan originates from the European Environmental Noise Directive (END) 2002/49/EC, which requires European Union (EU) member states (including NI via the Environmental Noise Regulations (NI) 2006) to assess and manage environmental noise from sources like roads, railways, airports, and industry.
