Speaking as he addressed council members this evening, Divisional Roads Manager, Simon Richardson said:

“So far this year we have completed a significant programme of resurfacing schemes across the borough including: the A21 Cherryvalley Line, Comber; C367 Church Hill/Moss Road and C272 Carrickmannon Road, Ballygowan; B172 Movilla Road, Newtownards; C252 Ballyblack Road East, Carrowdore; and the U8037 Ashbury Avenue, Bangor. Resurfacing schemes at C251 Crawfordsburn Road Newtownards and B178 Hillsborough Road, Comber are also nearing completion. Further schemes are programmed at: A21 Killinchy Street, Comber; A20 Rowreagh Road, Kircubbin; and the U132 Cultra Avenue, Holywood. We also completed a major drainage scheme on the A2 Bangor Road, Holywood earlier this year.

“Our Network Development Programme has seen the completion of junction improvement works at the Deerpark Road/Loughdoo Road junction at Ardkeen and the provision of two new pedestrian controlled crossings at Castle Street in Comber and at Circular Road, Newtownards, close to Regent School.

“All of these projects will realise significant benefits for both the local community and commuters in Ards and North Down.”

    Mr Richardson continued:

“It is clear that last year’s severe winter had a significant detrimental impact on the road network and at the start of this financial year the Department set aside £15 million for a roads recovery fund which is being used to address areas of particular need across the road network. We have made excellent progress completing a number of these schemes across the borough and we will continue with this work during the remaining months of the year.

“We are nearing completion of our routine maintenance programme for the summer season which included an enhanced grass cutting service and a full weed spraying service across the borough.”
