Consultation on improvements to the ADI AMI schemes in Northern Ireland

Consultation opened on 23 March 2016. Closing date 15 June 2016.

This consultation seeks views on proposed changes to the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) / Approved Motorcycle Instructor (AMI) schemes in Northern Ireland.

Consultation description

The consultation focuses on three key areas:

  • introducing a power for immediate suspension of an instructor’s registration in order to safeguard pupils, for example, where the police have decided that there is a public protection risk and have disclosed relevant information to the Registrar
  • changing the legislation to enable instructors to request voluntary removal from the Register
  • considering options to enable instructors who have voluntarily left the Register, or whose registration has lapsed for a period, to rejoin the Register without having to re-sit the full qualifying examination.
