Summary
Tetra Tech, on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure, are developing proposals for the Bellarena to Bishop's Gate Greenway, a project that aims to improve opportunities for walking, wheeling and cycling between Bellarena, Magilligan and Downhill.
Consultation description
A public engagement event was held in March 2026 to gather early feedback on proposals for the greenway. Feedback received was positive, with 93% of respondents supporting the overall ambition of delivering a new greenway. Following this engagement, a range of potential route options have been identified. We are now seeking your views on these options to help inform the selection of a preferred route. Route options can be viewed online through the consultation portal or in person at the public consultation event.
Project Objectives
By 31 December 2030, the project aims to:
- Deliver approximately 14km of active travel infrastructure linking Bellarena Station, local communities and key destinations.
- Provide a high-quality walking, wheeling and cycling route that improves access to local services and facilities and enhances user perceptions of safety and journey quality.
- Increase walking, wheeling and cycling levels among residents and visitors compared with established baseline conditions.
- Deliver environmental improvements through sustainable transport infrastructure that maximises opportunities to promote biodiversity and environmental quality along the corridor.
- Strengthen tourism and the local economy by extending the North Coast recreation network and improving access to key visitor destinations.
