European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages

On 2 March 2000, the UK Government signed up to the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. This Charter is an international convention designed to protect and promote regional and minority languages. The Department now has an obligation to meet commitments made in the Charter Guidance issued, in respect of Irish and Ulster Scots.

    Department's Language Policy

In order to show how the Department fulfils its commitments under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages it has produced two guides for staff which are reviewed annually:

    • Language Policy - Irish 2023
    • Language Policy - Irish (Gaeilge) 2023
    • Language Policy for Ulster Scots - English 2023
    • Language Policy - Ulster Scots in Ulstèr-Scotch 2023

    Contact

If you wish to conduct business with the Department using Irish or Ulster-Scots, a voicemail system is in operation on 028 9051 5252 for Irish, and 028 9051 5251 for Ulster-Scots.
