  • Temporary traffic management for final phase of A28 Belfast Road Newry resurfacing

    Date published: 6 June 2017

A temporary one-way system from New Street to Damolly roundabout will be implemented from Monday 12 June to facilitate the completion of a £350,000 resurfacing scheme for the A28 Belfast Road Newry.

    Resurfacing work

This significant resurfacing scheme, on the main road from Newry to Belfast, will provide almost one kilometre of new asphalt road surface, footways and associated drainage improvement works. The resurfacing work extends for a distance of approximately 0.7 kilometres from its junction with New Street, to just beyond its junction with the Ashgrove Road.

This final stage of the works will consist of further preparatory works at the northern end of the scheme and completion of the carriageway resurfacing through the whole of the scheme.

The one-way system will divert traffic via A28 onto A27 Armagh Road arriving at Newry Court House. HGV traffic will be diverted via the A1 onto the Dublin Road to access Newry City. All vehicles accessing properties and businesses between New Street and the Damolly roundabout (Mourne Country) will be required to use the one way system during its operation. All motorists are advised to follow the signs and allow additional time for travelling.

Works will take approximately three weeks and are anticipated to be substantially completed by Friday 7 July 2017.

The above planned dates are subject to favourable weather conditions and the public will be kept informed of any change.

The Department for Infrastructure has carefully programmed the works operations and traffic management arrangements in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public, however motorists should be aware that some delays may be expected and that additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.
