Road Improvement Scheme for Belfast Road, Ballygowan

Date published: 25 January 2021

A £450,000 resurfacing scheme on Belfast Road, Ballygowan will commence on Monday 1 February 2021.

The scheme will extend for a distance of 520 metres from the Ballygowan Roundabout to the 30 mph speed limit.

The initial phase of the works will last for three weeks and involves full depth carriageway reconstruction over a length of 150 metres. During this period a full road closure will be in operation on the Belfast Road from the Saintfield Road roundabout to the Tullygarvan Road.

A daytime road closure will then operate for the remaining five weeks of the scheme, Monday to Friday only, between the hours of 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.

During times of closure a signed diversion will be in place via Ballygowan Road, Comber, Hillsborough Road, Moneyreagh Road and Belfast Road, Ballygowan.

Commenting on the scheme Minister Mallon said:

“This significant investment will be welcome news for residents and businesses in Ballygowan and will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of the road for all who use it. I would like to thank those who live or work along this section of road in advance for their co -operation while this much needed work is completed.”

The Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimise inconvenience to the public.  Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to follow the alternative routes which will be clearly signed on the approaches to the closure. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses.

In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers, the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to take extra care when travelling in the vicinity of the works.

Substantial completion of the works by 27 March 2021 is dependent on favourable weather conditions, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change. Some working under temporary traffic signals may be required after this date.

All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of work in place for staff and contractors.
