    Date published: 3 March 2023

A £320,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on Main Street, Clough will commence on Sunday 19 March 2023.

    Lane closure during resurfacing work

The resurfacing scheme will involve the asphalt resurfacing of a 0.5 kilometre stretch of Main Street, from a point immediately south of the Blackstaff Road junction to, and including, the Main Street/Newcastle Road/Downpatrick Road roundabout.

This work will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of this section of the road network to the benefit of local residents, businesses and those who travel between Newcastle and Belfast/Downpatrick and is expected to be completed by Friday 7 April 2023.

To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme it will be necessary to implement overnight road closures from 8.00 pm to 6.00 am, Monday to Friday, from Monday 20 March 2023 to Friday 7 April 2023. The road will be open to traffic from 6.00 am to 8.00 pm each day and over the weekends.

Ballynahinch bound traffic will be diverted via Newcastle (A2) and Castlewellan (A50) to Ballynahinch (B175). Newcastle bound traffic will be diverted to Castlewellan along the B175 onwards to Newcastle (A50).

It is expected that significant delays will be experienced as a result of these temporary traffic management measures and drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journey. Local access for residents and emergency services will be maintained at all times although some minor delays may be experienced.

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience, however, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.

Subject to favourable weather conditions all work will be completed by 7 April 2023, however, the Department will keep the public informed of any change.

All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
