Resurfacing scheme for A28 Armagh Road, Loughgilly

Date published: 07 February 2023

Resurfacing on the A28 Armagh Road at Loughgilly will commence on Monday 13 February 2023, following the completion of advance drainage works in December 2022.

Resurfacing work

This second phase of improvement work, extending from 100 metres north of the Killycarn Road junction to 200 metres south of the Ballyvally Road junction, when completed will see a major capital investment in the road infrastructure on this key trunk route.

To help ensure the safety of those using the road and to facilitate the works, it will be necessary to operate a daily lane closure, Monday to Friday, under traffic signal control, from 08.00 am to 18.00 pm commencing on Monday 13 February 2023 and then reverting to 09:30 am to 18:00 pm from Monday 20 February until Friday 31 March 2023.  Overnight lane closures will also take place from 19.00 pm – 06.00 am from Monday 13 March until Saturday 18 March.  It will also be necessary to implement a full road closure on the weekends of 11/12 and 25/26 March 2023 from 08.00 am Saturday to 19.00 pm Sunday.

Traffic travelling toward Newry (Southbound) will be diverted via the B133 Bessbrook Road, Mountnorris, Bessbrook and A25 Camlough Road, with traffic travelling towards Armagh (Northbound) via the A28 Gosford Road, Poyntzpass, Tandragee and Markethill.

Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey as delays are likely in the area and to also note a 40mph speed restriction will be in place for the duration of the works.

The Department has carefully planned these road works and associated traffic management arrangements in order to minimise inconvenience to the public.

Completion of the work by Sunday 26 March 2023 is dependent on favourable weather conditions. The Department will keep the public informed of any change. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.
