Kimmins commends Bridge Accessible Transport for connecting people

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has commended Bridge Accessible Transport for the contribution it makes to keeping people connected within their wider community.
The Minister was visiting Bridge Accessible Transport premises at Springtown Industrial Estate as part of a range of events during Community Transport Week, which runs each year in recognition of the important role providers play connecting people and communities through affordable and accessible transport.
Bridge Accessible Transport, which also marks 30 years of operation this year, delivers the Disability Action Transport Scheme in its operational area. It also operates Shopmobility Foyle, providing mobility equipment loans and accessible mobile vehicle delivery service to homes, shopping and community retail centres, to meet member needs.
Minister Kimmins said:
“Community transport services are a valuable lifeline for many in local communities and I am delighted to join Bridge Accessible Transport in its 30th anniversary year.
“Today was an opportunity to see and hear first-hand from service users on the impact these services make to people’s lives in supporting independence, accessibility and social inclusion. I also heard from staff and volunteers on the challenges they face but also on how rewarding their role can be by helping others.
“Bridge Accessible Transport offers a unique combination, delivering vital door to door transport as well as providing the loan of mobility equipment. Without these services, disabled people and others who rely on them would find it difficult to access goods and services and remain connected to family and friends. Staff and volunteers can be very proud of the work they are doing here.”
Minister Kimmins added:
“Earlier this week I announced that I would be providing £1million to allow each of our 13 community transport providers across the north to procure a minibus each as many community transport vehicles are ageing and require replacement. This addition to the Bridge Accessible Transport fleet will allow them to continue to deliver such a valuable service safely and efficiently.”
