Speaking as he addressed council members this evening, Network Development Manager, Harry Gallagher said:

“The A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe dual carriageway commenced on site in September 2018 with earthworks getting underway at sections close to Foreglen and Drumahoe. This £220 million project will provide 25.5 kilometres of dual carriageway including a bypass for Dungiven.

“Work has already been completed on a number of projects this year including: road resurfacing at Bradley Way in Strabane, Caw Roundabout, Foyleside Roundabout, Strand Road and Foyle Street in Londonderry. Over the remaining months of the current financial year, Derry City and Strabane District Council will see the completion of further resurfacing projects including the Broadbridge Roundabout, Lisnarragh Road at Aghabrack, Donemana, Woodend Road, Ballymagorry and Longland Road at Ballyneaner, Claudy bringing the total spend to the value of £2.5 million.

“In addition approximately £1 million of Street Lighting works are underway including £660k for LED lantern renewals. Work is complete in a number of housing areas across the District Council including Glenowen Park and a phase in Currynierin Estate in the City.  Lighting masts have been replaced at Lecky Road and lantern renewals carried out on Culmore Road, with further planned for completion this year including Buncrana Road and Queen’s Quay in the City and Victoria Road in Newbuildings.

“Work is nearing completion on the reconstruction of the Ballynameen Bridge in Claudy which is now open to traffic. A number of pedestrian signal upgrades have also been completed or nearing completion including an upgrade to the signal crossing at Lifford Road, Strabane and Melmount Road, Sion Mills. Project design and land acquisition is ongoing on a number of schemes to deliver improved junction sight lines including a scheme at Drumlegagh Road North, Castlederg. These projects will realise significant benefits for those travelling within and through the Council area.”

Mr Gallagher continued:

“It is clear that severe winter weather and the very hot summer has had a significant detrimental impact on the road network and the Department will continue to identify those roads most in need of repair and prioritise this work alongside other ongoing priorities.

“The total 2018/2019 roads structural maintenance capital budget for Northern Ireland is £75 million, and of that, £15 million has been set aside for a roads recovery fund.  This is being used to address areas of immediate need across the road network, including locations with significant numbers of potholes caused by the cold winter and roads damaged by the prolonged hot weather in June and July.

“The ongoing maintenance programme has included an enhanced grass cutting service to ensure all roadside verges and sightlines are cut at least twice in the period April to October. A full weed spraying service has also been ongoing during this period.”
