Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme Training Exercise

A training exercise to install the temporary defences, which work alongside the permanent sections of the Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme, will take place between 14 – 18 September 2026.
The £33m Belfast Tidal Flood Alleviation Scheme was completed in 2025 and brings enhanced protection from tidal flooding for over 3000 homes and businesses in the City. It has been designed taking into account climate change projections to 2080.
The Department is leading the exercise whilst engaging with multi-agency partners to carefully plan and minimise inconvenience. A full test was completed last year and the annual exercise will test a different area of the scheme each year. This will familiarise staff with the equipment and provide an additional opportunity to practise emergency response procedures.
This year the locations are:
Harbour Estate
Sydenham (Greggs Quay to The O2 Belfast)
Sydenham (Pottinger's Quay)
Ravenhill
As part of the exercise, the slip road from Ravenhill Road to the Albert Bridge will be closed overnight between 11 pm and 6 am on Wednesday 16 September. If required, the closure may also be in place on Thursday 17 September again overnight between 11 pm and 6 am. Diversion signage will be provided, directing city centre-bound traffic via Bridge End and Queen's Bridge.
There may also be some short-term disruption and temporary footpath closures at other locations. Advisory signs will be provided where necessary, including along the towpath.
