Cross-border transport statistics

The Department for Infrastructure commissioned Atkins to undertake research analysis of cross-border transport movements for the Department for the Economy using the recently constructed computer models of Northern Ireland and the Belfast area.

The focus of this research analysis was on endeavouring to better understand the nature of movements around the border, including the origins and destination locations of private car traffic. However, as the model has combined data from a number of sources including the 2011 Census, investigations were also undertaken into preliminary estimates of total cross-border people movements.

This Technical Note prepared by Atkins summarises the research analysis undertaken and the estimates derived from the models. The nature and extent of cross-border movements at a population level remains a challenging endeavour, and one where further work will be undertaken by the Department for the Economy.
