Announcement of preferred route, February 2009

Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy announced the preferred route on 10 February 2009 . The Minister said “I am pleased to report that Roads Service has completed the important route assessment stage of the proposed improvements to Buncrana Road in Derry. I can confirm that the result of extensive consideration is that the improvements will be carried out on-line along the entire route between Pennyburn roundabout and the border.”

The preferred route is in two parts:

  1. the red route widens the existing road between Pennyburn roundabout and Skeoge roundabout to 4 lanes, providing 2 lanes of traffic in each direction
  2. the navy route widens the existing road between Skeoge roundabout and the border with the Republic of Ireland to dual carriageway standard

The preferred route is the culmination of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 assessments as presented at the public consultation events held in April 2007 and April 2008 respectively and has been assessed against the five Government objectives for transport: environment, safety, economy, accessibility and integration.
